Tasting Notes

A creative Paso Robles take on the traditional GSM blend. Inspired by the winemakre's great grandfather Sylvester “SLY” Dusi, who began the Dusi family legacy in Paso Robles in the early 1920’s. A sultry blend of Grenache and Syrah with Tempranillo in the place of the traditional Mourvedre bringing earthiness and spice.

This well-rounded wine opens up with cherries and wild berry aromas then teases you with notes of crème brûlée and bubblegum. Medium-bodied, the entry is soft and sultry, then elevates into flavors of dried cherries and cocoa. With time, the dark fruit flavors from the Syrah emerge. Rounded tannins and a long finish invite you to take another sip.

The Never Idle Vineyard is a beautifully manicured 8-acre, dry-farmed vineyard, nestled in the hills of the West Side of the Templeton Wind Gap. This vineyard was carefully chosen to expand varietal diversity among the J Dusi wine program. All three varietals for this blend were grown in this vineyard. The wine was aged for 16 months in a combination of 60% French Oak and 40% American Oak. New Oak barrels accounted for 20% while 1-2 year barrels and neutral barrels weighed in at 40% each.

Thank you Alice and Divvy-up for this preview bottle of J.Dusi Sly. I had not had Grenache or Tempranillo varietals ,until a couple of years ago where I discover these varietals from a different wine site. These are now two of favorites with WineSmith making my favorite Grenache and Twisted Oak making my favorite Tempranillo for comparison.

The cliff notes: If you have patience, you will be rewarded. The first smell was strawberry. The color was a light ruby in the glass and it had decent legs. We let the wine rest while making dinner. Dinner that night was Flanders Hanger steaks, farmer’s market corn, and tomatoes with aged balsamic. The initial taste was blackberries and acid. It was not puckering, just tannic. We decided to save half the bottle to see how the flavors developed.

Night two, the dinner was steelhead, roasted baby potatoes, and salad. This is where the wine showed up. The blackberry was more pronounced, the acid was tamed, and vanilla notes were present. It was a well rounded with a hint of baking spice.

The food on both nights did not bring anything to the tasting. The big difference was the time. You will be rewarded if you wait. It was interesting to see how this wine evolved over time. I tried to add pictures, but I loved the cork. The cork says “ Killed this bottle with__
