2018 Furthermore Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes
Reflective of the nuances of cool climate wines, this Pinot offers up a lovely ruby of medium intensity in the glass. Pronounced aromas in this old world style Pinot lead with earth, pepper, graphite and dried herbs, balanced by rich red fruit with ripe cherry and hints of strawberry. There's a slight note of licorice which becomes more recognizable on the palate, and is complemented by ripe fruit and savory dried herbs. Medium acidity pairs well with a touch of fine, firm tannin showing off notes of baking spice. We love the terroir of the west Sonoma Coast. We are fortunate to work with several amazing vineyards to produce single vineyard designate Pinot Noirs. This cuvée is a blend made completely from these tiny West Sonoma Coast vineyards in Occidental and west Sebastopol that we use for our Sonoma Coast single vineyard designates.

“Let me tell you why you’re here. You are here because you know something. What you know, you can’t explain. But you feel it.” - Morpheus, ‘The Matrix'
After decades of huge, fruit forward, extracted wines are you ready for a change?
There's a move among artisan winemakers toward wines that highlight the authentic interaction of the fruit and terroir. Cool climate wines are at the forefront of this trend.

2018 Furthermore pinot noir, Sonoma coast
It's with great excitement that I share my very first Divvy-up review! Thanks to Alice and WD for the opportunity to labrat on this exciting, new platform.
My wife and I sampled this over two nights. Pop and pour on day 1:
Appearance: Deep garnet color, clear and free of sediment
Aroma: Cherry, cherry and maybe more cherry! Maybe a hint of clove
Flavor: Cherry cola all day long. Fruit forward without being syrupy. Medium bodied with just enough acidity to keep things fresh. Mild tannins. Finish a good 10-15 seconds. Left on the counter overnight, no ar.
Day 2 was paired with sushi and not much has changed. I lost the clove and just found a more generic spice component to the nose, but this was still dominated by cherry. There may have been a hint of earthiness there also, but was not dominant. It was rich without being over the top. Went better with the sushi than I originally expected. I might have liked a bit more acid, but there was enough to take on the meal with its strong yet delicate flavors.
Overall thoughts: When it come to wine, I am not a purist. I can appreciate different styles for different occasions. While I tend to drink more retrained wines, this was really enjoyable as a fruit forward, Cali style pinot done right. It will not please the AFWE crowd, but I don't think that's the target audience.
I could tell this was a well made wine, and enjoyed it with and without food. I'd be curious to see ph numbers, as I initially pegged this as a cocktail wine. But the acid held up against a meal, which impressed me. I think it does a good job of delivering fruit without pushing into fruit bomb territory. My wife also gave this the thumbs up.
I see this doesn't ship to my state, but I would definitely have considered a case purchase as a crowd pleaser, especially with Thanksgiving and the holidays coming fast.
I am happy to answer any questions I can. Cheers!
Nice write up, thanks. I like their wines and picked up a few bottles of the Rosé earlier this year. I tasted this at a friend's place not too long ago. Lots of cherry for sure. I thought I remembered that it gave me that RRV indicator of pepper spice and earth early. Doesn't appear that you got too much of that. You've given me the right motivation to check into the virtual tasting later this week to confirm with the winemaker before I pull the trigger, although it sounds like a good bet either way! Thanks again.
Visited the Furthermore tasting room a few years ago, I think they were just starting to rebrand as Furthermore (I seem to recall they had picked up a new winemaker who was doing great things). I enjoyed the visit and their wine a lot, and purchased a bunch of their blanc de noir a couple years ago for my wedding - I still have a couple bottles kicking around and it's fantastic.
If I wasn't heavily overstocked right now, I'd be picking up a case without question.
Houstonian - too much wine to drink
We tasted this wine for the first time this evening and really enjoyed it! I wasn’t familiar with Furthermore previously, but definitely will be looking them up for the future! We tried their 2018 Pinot Noir and right off the bat noticed it had a beautiful ruby color and soft aroma. An ultimate easy drinking wine that has subtle flavors of raspberry and strawberry maybe a touch of an earthy note. On the dry side but still very soft and not a lot of tannins which I prefer. We had this with steak salads, but it think it would easily pair with pasta, salmon or stand alone!
